·     Take an iron nail, a piece of chalk, and a rubber band

·     Try breaking them by hammering, cutting, stretching

·     In which of the above three substances do you think the particles are held together with greater force?


Observation Activity 1.7 Class 9 Science

 

When we try to break an iron nail, chalk, and rubber band, we find that iron nails can’t be broken but chalk can be broken easily and the rubber band can be stretched long.

A strong force is needed to break an iron nail whereas chalk is broken with a weak or light force.


Explanation Activity 1.7 Class 9 Science

 

All substance or matter is made up of small particles and these particles have the force of attraction between them. The Force of attraction between particles in different substances is different.

In this activity, the force of attraction between particles of nails is strongest and lowest in chalk.

Rubber has a long chain of molecules and a covalent bond is present between these particles so rubber is elastic.
