·     How do you think the tendency to lose electrons will change in a group?

Discussion:

·  When we move down from top to bottom in a group, the atomic size increases due to a corresponding increase in the number of electron shells. As a result, the force of attraction between the nucleus and electrons decreases, and hence, the tendency to lose electrons increases.


·  When we move from left to right in a period, the nuclear charge increases in a regular manner by one unit, and hence, the force of attraction between the nucleus and electrons increases. As a result, the tendency to lose electrons decreases.


Conclusion: This activity indicates that the tendency to lose electrons increases down in a group but decreases across a period.
