You are suggested to study NCERT activity 5.3 class 10 science explanation with conclusion so that you can attempt questions based on the activity 5.3 class 10 science.

Class 10 Science Chapter 5 Periodic Classification of Elements

Activity 5.3 Class  10 Science

·     How were the positions of cobalt and nickel resolved in the Modern Periodic Table?

· How were the positions of isotopes of various elements decided in the Modern Periodic Table?\

· Is it possible to have an element with atomic number 1.5 placed between hydrogen and helium?

· Where do you think should hydrogen be placed in the Modern Periodic Table?

Discussion: The atomic number of cobalt (Co) is 27 and that of Nickel (Ni) is 28. In the modern periodic table, elements are placed in increasing order of their atomic numbers. So, cobalt (group 9) is placed before nickel (group 10) and hence, their positions are accordingly to their atomic numbers in the Modern Periodic Table.

In the modern periodic table, elements are arranged in increasing order of their atomic numbers. Because isotopes of an element have the same atomic number, therefore, they are placed at the same position in the modern periodic table.

As the atomic numbers of elements are always in the whole number, therefore atomic numbers like 1.5 is not possible.

As hydrogen has the lowest atomic number and also has the lowest atomic mass, therefore it should be placed in group 1 and period 1.

Conclusion-  In the Modern Periodic table, elements are arranged in increasing order of atomic numbers, so in the given activity all the queries can be solved on the basis of atomic numbers.
