Activity 1.12 Class 9 Science


Take about 150 g of ice in a beaker and suspend a laboratory thermometer so that its bulb is in contact with the ice.

·     Start heating the beaker on a low flame.

·     Note the temperature when eh ice starts melting.

·     Note the temperature when all ice has converted into water.

·     Record your observation for this conversion of solid to liquid state.

·     Now put a glass rod in the beaker and heat while stirring till the water starts boiling.

·     Keep a careful eye on the thermometer reading till most of the water has vaporized.

·     Record your observation for the conversion of water in the liquid state to the gaseous state.

During this activity, the temperature remains constant till the complete ice has been melted and again temperature remains constant till the liquid gets vaporized.

After the observation, we can conclude that –

i.              The temperature remains constant during the inter-conversion of substance or matter from one state to another.

ii.           Ice starts melting at 0C  and the temperature remains constant(0C) till all the ice gets melted.

iii.        When we heat a solid substance, the kinetic energy of particles increases, and due to which force of attraction decreases and inter-particle spaces increase, then the solid is converted into liquid.

iv.         The heat energy is used to overcome the force of attraction between particles of solid, and the solid gets converted into liquid. The amount of heat energy utilized in breaking the force of attraction between particles of solid is known as ‘ Latent heat of fusion

v.            The temperature at which a liquid boils at one-atmosphere pressure is called the boiling point. The boiling point of water is 100 C. During the boiling of water temperature remains constant(100C).

vi.          The amount of heat energy is utilized in breaking the force of attraction between particles of liquid, this is known as ‘ Latent heat of vaporization.
