Activity 9.6 Class 9 Science Chapter 9 Force and Laws of Motion

Activity 9.6 Class 9 Science belongs to Chapter 9 Force and Laws of Motion   Class 9 Science. You will get a complete solution with an explanation and a conclusion. After reading activity 9.6, you will be able to answer the questions based on the activity.

Activity 9.6 Class 9 Science Chapter 9

You are suggested to study NCERT activity 9.6 class 9 science chapter 9 explanation with a conclusion so that you can attempt questions based on the activity 9.6 class 9 science.

Activity 9.6 Class 9 Science

   ·     Take a test tube of good quality glass material and put a small amount of water in it. Place a stop cork at the mouth of it.

   ·     Now suspend the test tube horizontally by two strings or wires as shown in the figure.

   ·     Heat the test tube with a burner until water vaporises and the cork blows out.

   ·     Observe that the test tube recoils in the direction opposite to the direction of the cork.

   ·     Also observe the difference in the velocity the cork appears to have and that of the recoiling test tube.

Activity 9.6 Class 9 Science
Newton's Third law of Motion

Observation Activity 9.6 Class 9 Science

The cork blows out to the right side and due to its reaction, the tube moves to the left.

Explanation Activity 9.6 Class 9 Science

When the test tube is heated, water in the test tube gets converted into vapours. When vapours expand, a force is exerted on the cork so the cork blows out.

In the reaction, the test tube moves opposite. As the mass of the test tube is more than that of the cork so the velocity of the test tube is smaller than the velocity of the cork.

So according to the third law of motion, blowing of cork is the action, and recoiling of the test tube is a reaction.

So there is an equal and opposite reaction to every action. This is the third law of motion.

Conclusion Activity 9.6 Class 9 Science

This activity demonstrates the ‘Third law of motion.’
