Activity 2.8 Class 10 Science

This activity demonstrates the electric conductivity of various liquids like acids, glucose, and alcohol, and the reason behind this property

Activity 2.8 Class 10 Science

Testing the electrical Conductivity of different solutions like acids, glucose, and alcohol

Aim of the activity

To test whether all the given liquids conduct electricity or not.

Materials used in the activity

S.N.

Materials

1

Dilute hydrochloric acid

2

Dilute sulphuric acid

3

Glucose

4

Alcohol

5

Beaker

6

Cork

7

Two nails

8

Wires

9

6 V battery

10

Bulb

11

Switch

Procedure

We take a 100 mL beaker and place a cork fixed two nails fixed on it. And we connect the nails to the two terminals of a 6-volt battery through a bulb and a switch.

Now we pour some dilute hydrochloric acid in the beaker and switch on the current and observe whether the bulb glows or not.

Now we repeat the same activity with dilute sulphuric acid, glucose, and alcohol separately and observe does the bulb glows in all cases.

Observation

Through this activity, we observe that –

   1. The bulb glows in the case of both acids.

 2. The bulb does not glow, and glucose and alcohol solution do not conduct electricity.

Explanation

Acid solutions conduct electricity because acids like HCl and H2SO4 produce ions in water, and these ions conduct electricity.

But glucose and alcohol do not produce ions in water so their solutions do not conduct electricity.

Conclusion

We can conclude that all acids conduct electricity, but solutions of glucose and alcohol do not produce electricity.

The electric current is carried through the solution by ions.

Multiple Choice Questions

   1. Which solution does not conduct electricity?

   a) Glucose

   b)   HCl

   c) H2SO4

   d) HNO3

Correct answer – (a) Glucose

   2. Alcohol does not show electrical conductivity because-

   a) Alcohol evaporates

   b)   Alcohol has high resistance

   c) Alcohol does not produce ions

   d)    None of the above

Correct answer – (c) Alcohol does not produce ions

    3. Which of the following solutions is an electrolyte?

    a) Alcohol

    b)   Glucose

    c) H2SO4

    d)     All of the above

Correct answer – (c) – H2SO4
