This activity helps us understand the acidic nature of
common food items used in our kitchen.
NIOS Class 10 Science and Technology Project File
This activity is based on the NIOS Class 10 Science and Technology chapter 8: Acids, Bases, and Salts.
Aim of the activity
To test whether packaged curd and fruit juice are acidic
or not
Materials Required
1. Packaged curd
2. Fruit juice in tetra packs
3. Blue and red litmus paper
4. Dropper
5. Container
Procedure
We go to the shop
and buy packaged curd and juice in a tetra pack.
We pour a small amount of each item into separate clean
containers and dip the blue litmus paper into both items separately and observe
the colour change.
Now we test
both items with red litmus paper and observe the colour change.
Observation
1. Blue litmus paper turns red when dipped in both curd
and juice.
2. Red litmus
paper shows no colour change with both curd and juice.
Explanation
Curd contains lactic acid, and fruit juice contains citric
acid. These acids are organic acids.
Acids turn blue litmus red. The red litmus remains
unchanged with both items, indicating that they are not alkaline.
Conclusion
This activity
demonstrates the nature of common food items like curd and fruit juice. These items
contain organic acids that turn blue litmus red.
