In this activity, we will list the items we use and classify them on the basis of the material they are made of- metals/glass/clay, and others. This activity helps us to understand the importance of grouping materials based on their properties.
Aim of the activity
To make
a list of daily-use items and sort them into groups
Materials Required
   1.
 Notebook
   2.
Pen/pencil
Procedure
We will make a list of ten things we have used
or consumed since the morning and compile our list with the lists made by our
classmates. Now we sort the items according to material.
We will
sort the items into the given table:
   a.
Things made of metal
   b.
Things made of clay/glass
   c.
Others
If we
find any item made of more than one material, we write it in both relevant
columns.
A large number of things and various food items are
made up of only compounds of carbon.
Observation
   1.
Many daily-use items are made of metals, glass, or clay.
   2.
Some items are made of more than one material.
   3.
Some items are made of different materials like paper, food, or plastic.
Explanation
Some
items are made of metals because of their strength, durability, and conductivity. Some
items are made of glass or clay due to their non-reactive nature. Most of the items
are made of carbon compounds like paper, plastic, and food items.
Conclusion
Most of the utilities that we use in our daily lives
are made up of compounds of carbon. These carbon compounds are called Organic
compounds.
Frequently Asked Questions
   1. Why
does carbon form numerous compounds?
Ans . – Carbon
forms numerous compounds because of its two main properties – Catenation and Tetravalency.
    2. Are
petroleum and fossil fuels carbon compounds?
Ans. – Yes, petroleum
and other fossil fuels are carbon compounds.
    3.
Why do we classify materials?
Answer
– We can study their properties and uses systematically.
   4.
Why are metals used for making utensils?
Answer
– Because metals are strong, durable, and good conductors of heat.
