This activity demonstrates that a force acts between magnets and also helps in detecting the region around the magnet where the magnetic force is experienced.
Magnetic Effect of Electric Current Activity Solution
This activity is based on the NIOS Class 10 science
and technology (212) Chapter 17- Magnetic Effect of Electric Current, Module 4-
Energy
Magnetic Force and Magnetic Field
Aim
To study the interaction between two magnets and to
understand the magnetic field
Materials Required
1. Two
bar magnets
2. A scale
Procedure
We place two bar magnets in a straight line on the
same plane at a distance of 10 cm. Now we bring the like poles of both magnets
towards each other and observe what happens.
Now we bring the opposite poles of both magnets
towards each other and observe what happens.
Observation
We observe that like poles repel each other and unlike
poles of magnet attract each other.
Explanation
We notice attraction and repulsion forces, which are
called the magnetic force. The force can be felt around the magnet in a specific
region; this region is called the magnetic field.
The magnetic
field is invisible but can be felt through attraction and repulsion between
poles. A magnetic needle or compass shows deflection in the magnetic field.
Conclusion
We can conclude that a magnetic field exists around a
magnet where magnetic forces act. This field can be detected through the
attraction between unlike poles and repulsion between like poles.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. What
is a magnetic field?
Answer – A region around a magnet where magnetic force
can be felt is called a magnetic field.
2. What
happens when like poles of a magnet are brought nearby?
Answer - The like poles of a magnet repel each other.
3. What
happens when unlike poles of a magnet are brought near?
Answer- The unlike poles of magnet attract each other.
