This activity helps us understand the importance of conserving nutrients when cooking. In the previous activity 4.1, we learnt about the changes that occur during cooking.
We know rice and dal are boiled in a large amount of
water, and the extra water is thrown away, but this is a bad habit.
Why is it necessary to break this habit?
It is necessary to break this habit because when rice
is cooked in excess water, the water is thrown away. Many important nutrients, such as vitamins from the B complex and minerals, dissolve in water and are lost.
Due to this habit, the nutritional value decreases. So we
should conserve the nutrients.
Why does the family refuse to change?
The family may refuse to change this habit for several
reasons:
1. They are used to the traditional method of
cooking rice.
2. They
believe that rice cooked with extra water tastes better.
3. They
may not be aware that nutrients are lost in the discarded water.
4. They
may think that changing the cooking method is difficult.
How can this problem be solved?
This problem can be solved in the following way:
1. Educate the family about the loss of nutrients
when rice water is thrown away.
2. Encourage
them to use the required amount of water.
3. Extra
water can be used in soup, gravies, or dough preparation.
4. Demonstrate
correct cooking methods.
Conclusion
This activity explains that by adopting better cooking practices
and spreading awareness about nutrient conservation, we can prevent the loss
of essential nutrients.
