Activity 4.4 Class 10 Science

·  Light a Bunsen burner and adjust a hole at the base to get different types of flames/presence of smoke.

·      When do you get a yellow, sooty flame?

·      When do you get a blue flame?


Discussion: We get a sooty flame when the hole of the Bunsen burner is closed, enough supply of air is not available, and hence the gas burns completely to produce a yellow sooty flame, on the other hand, when the hole is open, complete combustion of gas occurs and a blue flame is produced.

 

Conclusion: From activity 4.4, it is clear that the amount of oxygen available at the time of burning is responsible for colour of the flame.

1. Discuss the combustion of fuels on the basis of the supply of air?

Ans. - Combustion of fuels can be divided into two types on the basis of the supply of air or oxygen-

(i) Complete combustion - When all the molecules of fule in vapour state combine with an Oxygen molecule, it is termed complete combustion. A blue flame is produced in complete combustion.

(ii) Incomplete combustion - When all the molecules of fule in vapour state do not combine with an Oxygen molecule and some molecules remained unburnt, it is termed incomplete combustion. A yellow sooty flame is produced in incomplete combustion. Carbon monoxide is also formed.


2. When a sooty flame or smoke is formed during the combustion of fuel?

Ans- A sooty flame is formed when fuel has an inadequate supply of oxygen. so in a limited supply of oxygen, unburnt carbon particles remain, this results in sooty flame or smoke.
