  Activity 1.10 Class 9 Science

Collect the following

a.   Water, cooking oil, milk, juice, and cold drink.

b.  Containers of different shapes. Put a 50ml mark on these containers using a measuring cylinder from the laboratory.

·     What will happen if these liquids are spilt on the floor?

·     Measure 50 ml of any one liquid and transfer it into different containers one by one. Does the volume remain the same?

·     Does the shape of the liquid remain the same?

·     When you pour the liquid from one container into another, does it flow easily?

Observation of Activity 1.10 Class 9 Science

Water or liquid is poured easily from the measuring cylinder into each container. The liquid or water with the same volume has taken the shape of that portion of the container that it occupies. The surface of liquid appears different in different containers.

All the liquids i.e. Water, cooking oil, milk, juice and cold drink etc. will flow when spoiled on the floor. These liquids flow easily when they are poured from one container to another.

Explanation of Activity 1.10 Class 9 Science

Due to the weak force of attraction between particles of liquids, these particles can move easily and rearrange their position so liquids do not have a fixed shape but the wall of the container act as a barrier so it acquires the shape of the container.

Liquids have fixed volume because volume depends on the total number of particles and the distance between particles at a given temperature.

Conclusion of Activity 1.10 Class 9 Science

A liquid can flow, thus, it is not rigid but is fluid. It acquires the shape of that container in which it is poured, the shape of the liquid is not fixed. The liquid has a fixed volume but not a fixed shape.

Queries based on activity 1.10 Class 9 Science

1.  Does the shape of the liquid remain the same?

Ans. No, the shape of the liquid does remain the same because the liquid acquires the shape of the container in which it is kept and the reason behind this – the inter particle force of attraction is weak.

2.  When we pour the liquid from one container to another, does it flow easily?

Ans. Yes, the liquid flows easily when we pour it from one container to another.

3.  What will happen if all the liquids are spilt on the floor?

Ans. – When all these liquids are spilt on the floor, they begin to flow but the speed of flowing is different because of the density of a liquid.
