What is active voice?


When the subject of the verb acts, the verb is said to be in the Active voice.

      a)  I ate an apple.

      b) She washed clothes.

      c)  They play football.

      d) He is writing a letter.


What is Passive voice?


When the object of the active voice becomes the subject, the verb is said to be a Passive voice.


     a)  An apple was eaten by me.

     b) Clothes were washed by her.

     c)  Football is played by them.

     d) A letter is being written by him.


Rules for changing Active voice into Passive voice


 We can change active voice into passive voice by following rules


    1.  Identify the object of the active voice and make it the subject of the passive voice.


    2.  Use the Past participle form (III form) of the Finite verb in the Passive voice.


    3.  Subject’ of the Active voice is made the ‘object’ of the passive voice followed by the preposition ‘by’.


    4.  Indefinite or unimportant subjects must be dropped when the sentence is changed into passive voice.


    1. Find the object of Active Voice


 You can easily find the object in the given sentence. It is mostly written just after the finite verb.


 (i) I read a book.

 (ii) You eat bread.

 (iii) He loves me.


'A book', 'bread', and 'me' are the objects of the finite verbs respectively read, eat, and love.


2. How to write the finite verb in Passive Voice (Active and Passive Voice Tense chart)

v.            My mother was preparing tea.

   P.V. Tea was being prepared by my mother.


vi.          He has flown a kite.

   P.V. Kite has been flown by him.


vii.       They had played football.

   P.V. Football had been played by them.


viii.     We will have built the bridge.

   P.V.   The bridge will have been built by us.


ix.          He can lift the box.

    P.V. The box can be lifted by him.


x.             People should follow the traffic rules.

   P.V.  The traffic rules should be followed.


3.    How to change the subject of the Active voice into the object of the passive voice & Vice -versa

4.     Always drop the following indefinite/ unimportant subjects in the Passive voice


Someone, everyone, people, somebody, everybody, anybody.


Example –

i.          Someone stole my purse.

             My purse was stolen.


       ii.        Everybody like my paintings.

       My paintings are liked.


iii.      People like sweets.

       Sweets are liked.
