Chapter -1- Food and Its Nutrients Activity Solutions
This activity
has been taken from Chapter 2 – Food and its Nutrients of NIOS Class 10
Home Science (216) Module 1 – Home Science in Daily Life.
Aim
To calculate the average daily fat consumption per
family member
Material Required
1. Oil
and ghee (grocery record)
2. Measuring
jar or bottle label
3. Calculator
4. Pen
and notebook
Procedure
We find out the total monthly consumption of oil and ghee
in our family (in kg or litres). We convert oil or ghee from litres to grams
using the formula: 1 litre =910 grams.
We add oil and ghee consumption to get total fat consumption
per month and divide the total monthly fat consumption by the number of family members.
Now we divide the result by 30 to get the daily fat consumption per person and compare it with the recommended fat intake.
Observation
Total monthly consumption of oil per month = 3 litres
3 ×910g = 2730g
Total consumption of ghee per month= 1 kg
1kg= 1000 g
Number of family members = 4
Total fat consumption per member per month
3730g g ÷ 4 = 932.5g
Total fat consumption per member per day
932.5 g ÷ 30= 31 g/day
The average
daily fat intake per family member is approximately 31 g/day, which is close to
the recommended intake of 30 g per day. Therefore, the fat consumption is adequate.
Explanation
Fat is a concentrated source of energy and is essential for:
i. Providing energy
ii. Keeping the body warm
iii. Helping absorption of vitamin A, D, E, and K.iv. Protecting vital organs
But excessive fat intake can lead to obesity, and too
little fat can cause weakness.
Conclusion
This activity shows that fat intake should be monitored
carefully. A daily intake of around 30 g per person per day for good
health.
