This activity is based on the life story of two sisters, Anuradha and Shonali, who stopped eating after facing emotional losses. 


It helps us understand how emotional stress can affect eating habits and how food is essential not only for physical health but also for mental and emotional well-being.

 This activity has been taken from Chapter 2 – Food and its Nutrients of NIOS Class 10 Home Science (216) Module 1 – Home Science in Daily Life.

 

Aim


To understand the importance of food in maintaining physical, mental, and emotional health.


Materials Required


   1. NIOS Home Science Book

   2. Pen or pencil


Procedure


We read the given case study carefully and think about the emotional situation of the two sisters.

We analyse how the deficiency of nutrients affects health.


Observation


We observe from the story that

i.    The sisters stopped eating due to emotional shock and depression.

ii.   Lack of food made them weak and unhealthy.

iii. Anuradha died due to severe undernutrition, and Shonali survived but required long-term medical and emotional care.


Explanation


   1. What could be the reasons why the sisters stopped eating?


Answer – The sisters stopped eating because they were deeply depressed after losing their parents and their dog. Their brother also left them. emotional pain, loneliness, sadness, and lack of motivation reduce appetite. People with depression ignore food and self-care, which causes malnutrition.


   2. Do you stop eating food when you are angry or sad?


Answer – Yes, many people lose their appetite when they are angry, sad, or stressed. Emotional disturbance can affect hunger. I also feel the same.


Conclusion


This activity teaches us that food is essential for life and good health. Emotional problems can cause people lose their hunger, and this leads to weakness and serious diseases.


Food provides energy and helps in the growth and repair of tissues, and protects the body from infections. So we must eat a balanced diet in difficult times.
