NIOS Class 10 Science Activity 22.3 Life Processes Solution

This activity helps us understand the process of digestion in different parts of the human alimentary canal.

NIOS Class 10 Science Activity 22.3 Life Processes

Life Processes Activity Solution

This activity is based on the NIOS Class 10 science and technology (212) Chapter 22- Life Processes Module 5- The Living World.

Activity 22.3- Digestion in the Alimentary Canal

Aim

To prepare a chart of the human alimentary canal and study the main digestive processes occurring in each part.

Materials Required

   1.  Chart paper

   2. Pencil

   3. Colour pens

   4. Diagram of the  human alimentary canal

Procedure

We draw a neat and labelled diagram of the human alimentary canal on a chart and write the name of each part of the alimentary canal.

Now we write one or two main digestive events in front of each part of the alimentary canal.

Observation

Activity 22.3- Digestion in the Alimentary Canal

We can easily observe digestive events in different parts of the alimentary canal.

i.      Mouth

       Salivary amylase

  Starch ------------→  Maltose

ii.    Oesophagus

No digestion occurs. Food moves by peristalsis.

iii.   Stomach

  HCl provides an acidic medium.

  Protein (Pepsin) Peptones

iv.        Small intestine

 Carbohydrates simple sugars

Proteins amino acids

Fats fatty acids + glycerol

v.  Large intestine

    Absorption of water

Explanation

Different digestive juices act on food in different parts of the alimentary canal. Saliva in the mouth starts the digestion in the mouth.

Digestion of food in the stomach occurs in an acidic medium provided by HCl. Complete digestion occurs in the small intestine.

Conclusion

This activity helps to understand the complete process of digestion in the alimentary canal. We can understand that each organ has a specific function in the digestion and absorption of food.
