In NIOS Class 10 Science Chapter 28- Carbon and its Compounds, Activity 28.2 helps students identify major regions in India rich in coal, petroleum, and natural gas. It also improves map skills by marking these locations.
Carbon and Its Compounds Activity Solution
This activity is based on the NIOS Class 10 science and technology (212) Chapter 28- Carbon and its Compounds Module 6- Natural Resources. Before learning about the distribution of fossil fuels in India, you can also explore activity 28.1, where we compare properties of carbon forms like graphite, coal, and petroleum.
Aim
To identify and locate major resources of coal, petroleum, and natural gas in India and mark them on the map
Materials Required
i. Map of India (political map)
ii. Pencil and eraser
iii. Atlas/textbook
Procedure
We take a blank outline map of India and use an atlas or a textbook to find the major locations of coal, petroleum, and natural gas in India.
Now we mark these locations on the map using different
symbols.
Observation
We observe :
Coal Producing Areas
i. Jharia (Jharkhand)
ii. Raniganj( West Bengal)
iii. Bokaro(Jharkhand)
iv. Talcher (Odisha)
v. Kobra (Chattisgargh)
Petroleum Producing Areas
i. Digboi (Assam)
ii. Mumbai high(Maharashtra)
iii. Ankleshwar (Gujarat)
iv. Nahrkatiya (Assam)
Natural Gas Producing Areas
i. Krishna- Godavari basin (Andhra Pradesh)
ii. Mumbai High (Offshore)
iii. Tripura
iv. Assam
Explanation
India has rich reserves of fossil fuels like coal, petroleum, and natural gas. These are formed from dead plants and animals over millions of
years. They are important energy resources used in industries, transport, and electricity
generation.
What is Carbon black?
Carbon black is a fine black powder obtained by
heating hydrocarbons in a limited supply of oxygen. This is process is called
incomplete combustion.
Uses of Carbon Black
i. Used as pigment in black inks
ii. Used in rubber tyres
iii. Used in paints and printing
Conclusion
We can conclude that:
i. India has several important regions rich in coal, petroleum, and natural gas.
ii. These resources are necessary for energy and economic development.
iii. Carbon black is an important industrial product.
