NIOS Class 10 Science Activity 28.3 Solution | Carbon and its Compounds

In NIOS Class 10 Science Chapter 28- Carbon and its Compounds, Activity 28.3 focuses on understanding why hydrocarbon resources like coal, petroleum, and natural gas are becoming scarce and what steps can be taken to conserve them.

NIOS Class 10 Science Activity 28.3 Solution

Carbon and Its Compounds Activity Solution

This activity is based on the NIOS Class 10 science and technology (212) Chapter 28- Carbon and its Compounds Module 6- Natural Resources.

Aim

To study the causes of depletion of hydrocarbons and suggest methods to conserve these resources

Materials Required

i. Textbook

ii. Newspaper/internet

iii. Notebook

Procedure

We collect information about the use of hydrocarbons such as petrol, diesel, LPG, etc. After that, we discuss with classmates or family members about their daily usage and find out the reasons why these resources are decreasing. We list possible methods to save or conserve these resources.

Observation

We find the reasons why hydrocarbons are getting scarce:

i.       Overuse due to the increasing population

ii.   Excessive use in vehicles and industries

iii. Limited availability

iv.  Wastage and inefficient use

v.     Slow formation of these resources

Explanation

Hydrocarbons are fossil fuels formed over millions of years from dead plants and animals. Since their formation is very slow and consumption is very fast, reserves are decreasing rapidly. This leads to scarcity.

How to save these resources (Hydrocarbons)

We can follow these steps:

i.     Use public transport

ii.     Avoid wastage of fuel

iii.   Switch to renewable energy sources like solar and wind

iv.    Use energy-efficient appliances

v.      Promote electric vehicles

vi.   Follow ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”

Conclusion

Hydrocarbons are limited resources and are being depleted due to overuse. Proper conservation methods must be adopted to ensure their availability for future generations.

(a)       Limited availability

(b)      Overuse

(c)       Both above

(d)      None of these

Correct answer – (c)  - both above

Q3. Which of the following helps in the conservation of hydrocarbons?

(a)       Wastage of fuel

(b)      Using a private vehicle

(c)       Use Public transport

(d)      All of them

Correct answer – ( c) – use public transportation

Q4. Hydrocarbons take …………………to form

(a)       Days

(b)      Months

(c)       Years

(d)      Millions of years

Correct answer – ( d) – Millions of years

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. Why are hydrocarbons non-renewable resources?

Answer – These take millions of years to form so they are considered to be non-renewable resources.

Q2. What is the main reason for the scarcity of hydrocarbons?

Answer- Overconsumption and increasing demand for fossil fuels.
