    ·     Let us try to separate acetone and water from their mixture.

    ·     Take eh mixture into a distillation flask. Fit it with a thermometer.

    ·     Arrange the apparatus.

    ·     Heat the mixture slowly keeping a close watch at the thermometer.

    ·     the acetone vaporizes, condenses in the condenser, and can be collected from the condenser outlet.

    ·     Water is left behind in the distillation flask.

Answer the following questions

i.               What do you observe as you start heating the mixture?

ii.             At what temperature does the thermometer reading become constant for some time?

iii.          What is the boiling point of acetone?

iv.          Why do the two components get separated?


Observation Activity 2.8 Class 9 Science


Acetone is a volatile liquid and has a low boiling point so on heating the mixture, acetone vaporizes first and on cooling, it gets converted into liquid form.


Explanation Activity 2.8 Class 9 Science


This method is known as distillation. It is used to separate the components of a mixture containing two miscible liquids having differences in their boiling points.

In this method, the component that has a low boiling point gets vaporized first and separated.

The distillation method is used to separate mixtures of two miscible liquids.


Answer the above questions

i.               The vapours of the liquid with a low boiling point(i.e. acetone) are formed first.

ii.             Thermometer reading became constant at 56℃.
