You are suggested to study NCERT activity 2.7 class 9 science Is matter around us pure explanation with a conclusion so that you can attempt questions based on the activity 2.7 class 9 science. Activity 2.7 class 10 science will be very useful for you.

Activity 2.7 Class 9 Science

    ·     Take a thin strip of filter paper.

    ·     Draw a line on it using a pencil, approximately 3 cm above the lower edge.

   ·     Put a small drop of ink (water-soluble, that is, from a sketch pen or the fountain pen) at the centre of the line. Let it dry.

   ·     Lower the filter paper into a jar/glass/beaker/test tube containing water so that the drop of ink on the paper is just above the water level and leave it undisturbed.

   ·     Watch carefully as the water rises up on the filter paper, and record your observation.

Answer the following questions

   1.    What do you observe on the filter paper as the water rises on it?

   2.  Do you obtain different colours on the filter paper strip?

   3.  What according to you. Can this be the reason for the rise of the coloured spot on the paper strip?

Observation Activity 2.7 Class 9 Science

In this method, the solvent diffuses through the filter paper and moves upwards. When solvent moves, it carries with the substances of the mixture present in the spot on the filter paper.

The substances which are absorbed strongly move slowly and on the other hand, the substances dissolved in the solvent move at high speed.

After some time, we find various spots on the filter paper.

Explanation Activity 2.7 Class 9 Science

This method is known as paper chromatography. This is used to separate colourd components of a mixture.

This method is based on the difference in adsorption of different components on the surface of a solid.

Answers to the above questions

   1.    When the water rises on the filter paper, the ink particles also rise with water.

   2.  A dye is a mixture of two or more coloured substances so different colours are obtained on the filter paper.

   3.  The rise of the coloured spots to different heights on the paper strip due to different solubilities of colour components in water present in the ink.

Applications of Chromatography

i.     This is used to separate drugs from the blood.

ii.   To separate pigments from natural colours

iii.  To separate colours in dye.
