NIOS Class 10 Science Activity 10.1 Force and Motion

This activity explains the effects of force applied to objects. We can observe numerous incidents around us where force affects the motion and shape of objects.

This activity provides you with a complete explanation and conclusion.

NIOS Class 10 Activity 10.1 Force and Motion

NIOS Class 10 Science and Technology (212) Project File

This activity is based on the NIOS Class 10 science and technology (212) chapter 10- Force and Motion from module 3- Moving Things.

Aim of the activity

To observe the effects of force on an object and understand the following:

i) Changing shape

ii). Starting motion

iii) Changing speed

iv). Changing direction

Materials Required

    1.  Balloon

    2. Football

    3. Bicycle

Procedure

(1) We take an inflated balloon and hold it between our palms. Now we press our palms inward by applying force on the balloon from both sides and observe the change.

(2) Now we kick a moving football which is coming towards us in a particular direction and observe the change.

(3) When we push a stationary ball, it starts moving.

(3) When we ride a bicycle and press the brakes, we observe the change.

Observation

We observe:

(1)      When the balloon is pressed, its shape changes.

(2)      Moving a football is kicked, its direction changes.

(3)      When a stationary ball is kicked, it begins to move.

(4)      When breaks are applied, the bicycle slows down.

Explanation

When we press the inflated balloon inward, we are applying equal and opposite forces. These two forces are called balanced forces.

The balloon does not move, but its shape changes. So, we can say that balanced forces can change the shape of an object.

Conclusion

We can conclude that force can :

(1)      Change the shape of the object

(2)      Change the direction of motion

(3)      Start the motion of an object at rest.

(4)      Change the speed of a moving object.

Frequently Asked Questions

    1. What is force?

Answer – Force is a push or pull that can change the state of motion or shape of an object.

   2. What happens to the balloon when a force is applied?

Answer- The shape of a balloon is changed when force is applied to it.

   3. Can force change the direction of a moving object?

Answer – Yes, when a force like kicking or pushing is applied to an object, it can change its direction.

    4. Can a force stop a moving object?

Answer – Yes, forces like applying a brake on a moving object can stop it.

    5. Can force set an object into motion?

Answer – Yes, force like pushing can set an object into motion.
