As we studied in the chapter that plants grow in length due to special tissues present in their growing ends, which are called apices. In this activity, we will identify the apices present in the weed plant.
Building Blocks of Life- Cell and Tissues
Activity Solution
This activity is based on the NIOS Class 10 science
and technology (212) Chapter 21- Building Blocks of Life- Cell and Tissues Module
5- The Living World.
Aim
To observe and identify the apices in a weed plant.
Materials Required
1. Small weed plant
2. Water
3. Magnifying
glass
4. Notebook
and pencil
Procedure
1. We gently uproot a small weed from the soil.
2. Wash the roots to remove soil.
3. Observe the tip of the root and stem.
4. Note the pointed growing ends present at both tips.
5. Draw a neat diagram.
Observation
1. A pointed root apex is seen at the tips of the root.
2. A shoot apex is seen at the tip of the stem.
Explanation
The tips of roots and stems contain merist
ematic tissues which are responsible for growth. These tips are called apices.
Cells present in apices divide rapidly and increase the length of the plant downward and upward.
Conclusion
We can conclude that apices are the growing regions of the plant and have meristematic tissues that are responsible for growth.
