NIOS Class 10 Science Activity 21.1 Building Blocks of Life- Cell and Tissues

In this activity, we compare a cell (the basic unit of life) with a brick (the basic unit of a house) and also understand how they are similar and different.

NIOS Class 10 Science Activity 21.1 Building Blocks of Life- Cell and Tissues

Building Blocks of Life- Cell and Tissues Activity Solution

This activity is based on the NIOS Class 10 science and technology (212) Chapter 21- Building Blocks of Life- Cell and Tissues Module 5- The Living World.

Aim

To compare a living cell with a brick

Procedure

   1. Think about how bricks join together to form a house.

   2. Think about how cells join together to form tissues and organs in the body.

   3. Write the similarities between a brick and a cell.

   4. List the points of the cell theory

Observation

i.    Many bricks build a house

ii.  Many cells build the body

iii. Bricks do not grow or divide.

iv.  Cells grow, divide, and perform life processes.

Explanation

A brick is the basic building unit of a house, and a cell is the structural and functional unit of a living organism.

Many bricks join together to make the walls of a house, and similarly, many cells unite to form tissues, organs, and the whole body.

According to the cell theory, all living beings are composed of cells, and all the functions of an organism result from the combined activities of cells.

Bricks provide strength to a house, and cells provide structure and carry out essential life functions.

Difference between a brick and a cell

A cell

A brick

It is living.

It is non-living.

A cell divides to form new cells.

Brick does not divide or reproduce.

A cell has functional organelles inside.

It is solid.

A cell performs functions.

It does not perform any functions.

A cell grows in size.

Brick does not grow.

Conclusion

This activity explains that a cell is similar to a brick because both act as building units, but a cell is living and a brick is non-living.
