NIOS Class 10 Chapter 1 Activity 1.1 Measurement in Science and Technology

In this post, we will discuss Activity 1.1 from NIOS Class 10 Science and Technology Chapter 1 Measurement in Science and Technology.

NIOS Class 10 Chapter 1 Activity 1.1

NIOS Class 10 Science and Technology Project File

Measuring Length Using Body Parts

Aim of the activity

To check the accuracy of measurements using parts of the human body and understand the need for standard units

Materials used in the activity

   1. Blackboard /wall/desk

   2. A group of 4 -5 learners

   3. Notebook

   4. Pen /pencil

Procedure

We form a group of 4 to 5 learners and select an object for measurement, likea blackboard or a desk.

Each learner measures the length of the object using “Hand span” and “Digit- width of one finger”.

Now we record each learner’s measurement in the table

Observation

S.N.

Name of the learner

Length of object

1

Ravi

10 hand span and 3 digits

2

Meena

9 hand span and 5 digits

3

Arjun

11 hand span and 2 digits

4

Sita

8 hand span and 3 digits

5

Suresh

10 hand span and 2 digits

Explanation

When we measure the length of an object using body parts, the results vary.

Conclusion

The variation in the measurement results is due to the different sizes of the span and fingers.

This activity demonstrates that non-standard units like hand spans and digits are not accurate and uniform.

This activity explains the importance of standard units in science and daily life.

The standard units (centimeters and meters) give us consistent and universally accepted results.

Knowledge gain

   1.  We understood that body-based measurement can lead to errors.

    2. We learned why standard units are essential for correct and scientific measurement.

So, this activity will be useful for the NIOS Class 10 Science and Technology Project File

Frequently Asked Questions

   1. Why do different learners get different measurements for the same object?

Answer – Because the size of hand span and digits vary in size from one person to another, that's why different learners get different results.

    2. What are hand span and digits?

Answer – A hand span is the distance from the tip of the thumb to the tip of the little finger when the hand is completely stretched.

   3. What is the main learning of this activity 1.1?

Answer- This activity helps us to understand that non-standard units are not reliable. We need standard units.

   4. Can body parts be used as units of measurement in science

Answer- No, body parts can be used for just estimation but not for scientific purposes.
