In this activity, we will prepare a suspension of wheat flour in water.
NIOS Class 10 Science and Technology Project File
This activity is based on the NIOS class 10 science
and technology chapter 2, Matter in Our Surroundings.
Aim the activity
To
prepare a suspension using wheat flour and water
Required Materials
1.
Wheat flour (200g)
2.
Water (250ml)
3.
Glass
4.
Spoon
Procedure
We
fill a glass with approximately 250 mL of water and add one cup of wheat flour
to it. Now we stir the mixture and leave it undisturbed for a few minutes, and
carefully observe.
Observation
We
can see wheat flour particles in water, suspended, making it cloudy. After some time, these particles settle down at the bottom of the glass and the water becomes
clearer.
Explanation
We
prepared a suspension which a heterogeneous mixture. A suspension is formed when
solid particles do not dissolve in liquid but are dispersed throughout the liquid
and settle down after some time.
Conclusion
We
can conclude that –
1.
Wheat flour does not dissolve in water.
2.
Wheat flour particles are dispersed all
over the liquid(water). This mixture is a suspension.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Why do the wheat flour particles settle down at the bottom of the glass?
Answer – Wheat flour particles are heavier than water, and due to gravity, they settle down.
2. Can the suspension be turned into a solution?
Answer
– No, suspension cannot be turned into a solution.
