This activity has been taken from Chapter 1 of Measurement in Science and Technology of NIOS Class 10 Science and Technology.
This activity helps us to understand how to
use a clinical thermometer and record body temperature.
NIOS Class 10 Science and Technology Project File
Observing a Thermometer and Measuring Body Temperature
Aim of the activity
To record body temperature in degrees
Celsius (ºC) and Fahrenheit (ºF)
Materials used in the activity
1. Clinical
thermometer
2. Cloth
Procedure
We take
a clinical thermometer and observe the measuring scale on it. Then, we clean the thermometer and place it under our tongue for 1 to 2 minutes.
Now we remove the thermometer and note the
temperature in both Celsius and Fahrenheit.
Note: You can take assistance from
parents or a doctor.

Explanation
The clinical thermometer has two scales –
Celsius and Fahrenheit.
Our normal body temperature is generally
37 ºC or 98.6 ºF. The clinical thermometer contains mercury inside.
Conclusion
Through this activity, we have learned how
to use a clinical thermometer and two types of temperature measurement units –
Celsius and Fahrenheit.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. What are the two temperature scales on a
clinical thermometer?
Answer – The two common scales are Celsius
and Fahrenheit.
2. What is normal body temperature?
Answer – Normal body temperature is around
37 ºC or 98.6 ºF.
3. Which
element is used in a clinical thermometer?
Answer - Mercury
4. How
can a doctor say you have a fever?
Answer – When the thermometer shows a value
above normal body temperature, then the doctor says we have fever.
